From walls to possibilities: ABB’s shift to Activity-Based Working

ABB faced a major challenge: transitioning from a traditional office setup to a flexible, dynamic workspace. With an ambitious set of requirements and a strong desire to implement activity-based working, the company brought in Meliopus. From concept to execution, we developed a smart and efficient workplace design focused on collaboration, flexibility, and natural daylight. Through a transparent design-and-build approach and thoughtful change management, ABB successfully made the leap to a modern, inspiring work environment.

The client:

For over 50 years, ABB has been a leading developer, producer, and supplier of analytical instruments for various industries — including laboratories, process, environmental, steam, water, and energy. ABB provides turnkey solutions known for their smart features, flexibility, and long lifespan. With specialized consultants and a wide range of solutions, ABB Benelux stands for technological advancement and tailored advice.

The assignment:

Previously located in the Nossegem industrial park, ABB recently began the search for a new office space, which they found at the business site The Wings in Diegem. ABB wanted to move away from having separate departments for each business unit and toward a more dynamic, flexible workplace. After signing the lease, ABB realized its program of requirements was too extensive for the available space. That’s when Meliopus was called in to revise the brief and develop an optimal workplace concept from A to Z.

Our approach:

1/ Toward a realistic program of requirements

ABB initially developed its own program of requirements while involving team leaders from its various business units — who responded with great enthusiasm. The result: an oversupply of workstations and meeting rooms, which the new space couldn’t accommodate. At ABB’s request, Meliopus conducted an analysis to optimize the program. Based on actual usage needs, we reduced and optimized the number of meeting rooms. We also restructured the number of workstations using realistic occupancy ratios and designed a flexible layout that fosters collaboration without creating overcapacity.

2/ Concept Development and Macroplanning

Using the revised requirements and available space, we created an initial spatial sketch focusing on openness, collaboration, and flexibility. With this sketch in hand, we took the client through the empty space to help them get a feel for the concept and location. This gave us the opportunity to present our vision and introduce the principles of activity-based working. We also did a final walk-through of the shell space with the client to ensure every detail was addressed before execution began — preventing any future disputes over defects or damage.

We then developed a layered macroplan, based on balanced layout and optimal flow:

  • Central Hub
The elevators and reception are located in the middle of the floor, acting as the main arrival point for both employees and visitors.
  • Plaza and Informal Areas
The building’s inner ring was designed as a vibrant plaza, perfect for quick meetings, informal chats, and coffee breaks. Situated away from the workstations, this layout encourages movement and spontaneous interaction while minimizing noise disturbance. To counter the lower natural light levels in this area, we chose playful and decorative lighting to create a cozy, homelike atmosphere.
  • Meeting and Collaboration Zones
Just outside the plaza are meeting rooms and a “firepit” — a tiered seating area ideal for quick pitches or group discussions.
  • Workstations and Quiet Zones
The building’s outer ring, along the windows, is reserved for workstations and quiet zones. This setup maximizes natural daylight exposure, supporting focus and well-being.

3/ Detailed microplanning

With macroplans approved, we dove into the microplanning stage — refining every detail. This phase was a great collaboration between our interior architect and ABB’s internal design team, who know the company and its people inside and out. Together, we selected the best colors, fabrics, materials, and office furniture. We placed extra emphasis on color psychology, natural light, greenery, biophilic elements, and optimal acoustics.

4/ Design and build: transparent budget and precise execution

ABB chose a design-and-build approach, where Meliopus not only created the concept but also handled the full execution and budget management. We prefinanced the project, and ABB only received a single final invoice. Regular, transparent updates on the budget and clear agreements on execution fees gave both ABB and our team confidence and clarity. We managed everything from market comparisons, quotes, and orders to invoicing and procurement, coordinating both ABB’s trusted suppliers and new partners. This meant ABB had no administrative burden — while always keeping final decision power to ensure the best value.

5/ Change management and hypercare during the move

Throughout the entire construction process, we kept our finger on the pulse with ABB employees. We kicked off with a plenary session using presentations, floor plans, and 3D visuals to share the vision, ideas, and project plan. Employees could ask practical questions and express concerns, which we took into account during design development. Next came workshops using the workplace game. These small group sessions led to well-supported agreements on space usage, meeting culture, and flexible work styles. Monthly newsletters kept everyone informed of progress, while regular ABW-themed polls gathered employee input for specific project elements.

Even after the office was operational, our Meliopus experts were present on-site to support employees and resolve any issues quickly. By actively involving staff and thoroughly preparing them for the move, we turned this transition into a warm and positive story.
