High-end hybrid workspaces aligned with C&A’s DNA

C&A’s headquarters in the Netherlands were previously located in Amsterdam but recently moved to The Hague. To design its brand-new offices from A to Z, the brand launched a competition. Meliopus emerged as the winner, delivering a high-end hybrid office environment for the fashion retailer. Our team went all out, showcasing immense talent to create an exceptional workspace.

The client:

C&A is one of the world’s best-known and most popular clothing chains. The brand prioritizes experience, a philosophy that extends from its stores to its back office. A welcoming look and feel make customer choices easier while fostering an optimal working atmosphere both in front and behind the scenes. Naturally, the new headquarters had to meet these same high standards.

The assignment:

The goal was to design a new office space as a central hub for activity-based flexible working. The space needed to include a plaza to encourage interaction and exchange—a place where events would thrive and influencers would proudly showcase online. The design and experience of the new headquarters had to align 100% with C&A’s DNA, emphasizing coziness, efficiency, and sustainability, with employee well-being as the foundation.

Our approach:

1/ Developing a macro plan

Starting with a blank floor plan, we had the creative freedom to demonstrate our expertise. Despite being a competition with no guarantee of execution, several Meliopus team members went above and beyond, unleashing their talent. We developed a macro plan outlining the optimal layout and flow between office zones, considering the building’s fixed structure, natural light exposure, accessibility via (escalators) and security control. Through boundless enthusiasm and constructive discussions with the client, we refined our ideas into a comprehensive master plan. The result? Meliopus secured the project with confidence.

2/ A thoughtfully designed macro plan

Next, our team stepped up the pace. From the macro design, we transitioned into a detailed, well-planned approach covering everything from general layout to technical specifications in each space. We conducted an in-depth study and engaged operational staff in the process. Through various workshops, we translated C&A’s DNA into mood boards, which we then converted into workspaces tailored to their preferences.

We fine-tuned the design through consultations with the client and data-driven insights, refining key details—from the ideal coffee machine placement to the safest emergency exits. A key aspect was ensuring a seamless connection to C&A’s retail stores. This familiar branding reinforces the bond between departments. Mannequins in administration areas, an acoustic partition wall made from recycled denim, wooden elements, and abundant greenery—C&A’s new headquarters in The Hague is both recognizable and inspiring.

3/ Change management for employees

Through our co-creation process, we partially prepared employees for the transition. Everyone had the opportunity to contribute, express preferences, and maintain their individuality. As the relocation date approached, Meliopus provided additional guidance, organizing site visits, Q&A sessions, and individual discussions to address any concerns. Employees could even explore the design through detailed renderings and a VR model, offering a realistic preview of their future workspace. The human aspect is often overlooked in such projects, but not at Meliopus. Our focus is always on the people who work in the space and the facilities they use.

4/ End-to-end project management

Meliopus guided C&A through the entire process with expertise and confidence—from macro planning to an almost seamless move (because, let’s be honest, unexpected challenges always arise). This is precisely why having an external partner is crucial for large-scale projects. You stay focused on your business, while we handle everything else. Our approach included in-depth analyses, team involvement, clear and transparent cost and planning scenarios, a creative yet logical space layout, and warm guidance for employees making the transition. The project was in safe and professional hands with Meliopus.

The result:

We couldn’t have put it better than the client did. After project completion, we received a heartfelt thank-you email from facility manager Geert, expressing how pleased everyone was with the transformation. Employees, management, and the facility team all praised the realization and the process leading up to it.

For Meliopus, this project was also a tremendous boost. It allowed us to bring together our expertise in facility management and interior design, resulting in a workspace we are incredibly proud of.
